Making it in the male dominated industry at home seems not to be enough for the Afro fusion goddess and Mbira exponent, Nancy Nasibo Matize as she is set to conquer Africa with her colorful vocals, adorable dance moves and undeniably breathtaking-percussion.
From starting as a backing vocalist in 2009 for Dumisani Ngulube and Amagents, Mutize has been in various bands and this prompted her to start her solo career in 2019. Only a Goddess survives establishing a career in the peak of Covid-19 and sees it through post Covid to end up performing at the recently held Sauti za Busara; an annual Pan African music festival that celebrates cultural Pluralism in Tanzania.
Identities Media TV (IDT) caught up with Nancy Mutize (NM) and below are excerpts from the interview.
IDT: How was it like performing at the Sauti za Busara Festival?
NM: Sauti Za Busara was amazing and the response we got as a team made us realize how powerful our music is and we felt really appreciated.
Furthermore, the whole experience was a platform for us to learn diverse ways to which we can enrich our music for the better enjoyment of our audience. It was also a very good way of connecting with other stakeholders in the music industry.
IDT: How have you managed to gain sound recognition outsideZimbabwe?
NM: I have managed to have collaborated on stage with musicians from Africa and Europe and this has made me get recognition. Also, having performed with Youssou Ndou in Brussels last year in February certainly helped.
IDT: Do you have any upcoming shows outside Zimbabwe in the near future?
NM: I am set to go for a music recording and have performanceslined up in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa in June. In addition, I have another performance in Mauritius (MOMIX 2023) in September this year.
IDT: Any advice you might want to leave for fellow women artistes.
NM: We have so much that we can do but most importantly we need to stay strong and push ourselves to do better as the industry is not easy for us women.
Lastly, there is need to uplift each other, promote unity and support each other’s projects.
