Underrepresentation Of Women In Arts Accolades

Women’s full and equal participation in all facets of society is a fundamental human right. However, around the world, from politics to entertainment to the workplace, women and girls are largely underrepresented.

The recently held Zimbabwe Music Awards(ZIMA) are an example of how women are largely marginalized, especially in the arts sector.

Held last weekend, the ZIMA awards saw 23 men in various categories taking awards home. On the contrary, only 4 women managed to win awards.

Speaking to Identities Media, Women and Children’s rights activist Nyari Mashayamombe said the representation of female artists at the ZIMAs is a disappointment to say the least.

“How does a National award event only give 4 women awards? Does it mean we have only 4 deserving women in this country? Did female artists not enter awards? We need ZIMA to explain this to us”, she said.

“All national awards need to take account of gender parity and ensure women are recognized the same as men. The constitution promotes gender equality and it goes without saying that national platforms such as the awards must reflect on that. We need ZIMA to be accountable to this and explain why women are so few on these awards! Women are consumers of music and also producers, why are they not being recognized”.

Songbird Rachel Mapinda, who has been working hard to release her debut album and break into the music industry said the reflection was discouraging for female musicians.

“Rooted in patriarchal norms and traditions, the consequences are far-reaching with detrimental and negative consequences on the personal, economic and future well-being of women and girls, their families, communities and the country at large,” she said.

“As women these are some of the reasons why we shy away from arts and only a few strong willed remain. It is soo hard to be recognized”.

Building a sustainable future for all, means leaving no one behind. Women and girls are critical to finding solutions to the biggest challenges we face today and must be heard, valued and celebrated.
