A fertility doctor based in Harare recently appeared in court on allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with his patient which included fondling her breasts and inserting fingers inside her private parts.
Tinovimba Mhlanga (36), was released on free bail and the matter was remanded to 28 July 2021.
On March 14, Zowa allegedly sought Mhlanga’s fertility expertise since she wanted a medical examination inorder to donate her egg to a certain couple.
The court heard that Mhlanga conducted some tests first on Zowa before telling her to proceed to the examination room where she removed all her clothes awaiting an internal scan by Mhlanga.
Mhlanga then went into the examination room and instructed Zowa to open her legs in a butterfly position for him to conduct the examination and went on to insert his two fingers into Zowa’s private parts whilst the other hand was holding her abdomen.
Mhlanga allegedly removed his fingers from Zowa’s private parts and smeared the discharge on her clitoris and proceeded to insert his fingers inside Zowa’s private parts several more times before instructing her to step down from the bed and bend down.
In this position, Mhlanga inserted his fingers into Zowa’s private parts whilst pressing himself on her, claiming that he wanted to check if her discharge had no infection.
It is alleged that Mhlanga went on to remove Zowa’s bra and started fondling her breasts claiming that he was carrying out a breast examination whilst breathing heavily on her ear.
After the traumatizing ordeal, Zowa went to Harare Central Hospital where she was examined and received counseling after narrating her ordeal to a counsellor and thereafter the matter was reported to the police leading to Mhlanga’s arrest.
Speaking to Identities Media, Zowa said she got in touch with 2 other girls who claim to have gone through the same thing with Dr Mhlanga.
One of the girls said she cannot testify because what they had was consensual. The other girl prefers to remain anonymous should she report the issue.
“They provided some really concerning information about what has been going on with Dr Mhlanga and a lot of other donors.
He was asking for blowjobs, anal sex and was allegedly involved with 3 members of the same family (a mother and 2 of her daughters)”, said Zowa.
Upon realizing that he had messed with the wrong patient, Mhlanga tried to spin the narrative by claiming he was a good person who only wanted to ‘help’ his patients.
“I have had a good relationship with all my patients, so if we talk I will clarify everything. I am not a bad person”, he said.
In a similar incident, a Chitungwiza woman was raped by one Leonard Mwale (24) after he lured her to his place of residence under the impression that he had the medication to cure her stomach ailment.
Upon arrival at Mwale’s residence, the bogus doctor is alleged to have given a tablet and an injection which rendered her unconscious.
She later gained consciousness and found the suspect in the process of raping her, thereby raising alarm.
A report was quickly made to the police leading to the arrest of the suspect various fake medicines were recovered in his premises.
ZRP Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi warned members of the public against seeking help through WhatsApp groups and urged vigilance when visiting medical labs.
“This is not the first time women have fallen victim to bogus doctors and prophets. Almost on a daily basis women are hoodwinked and they end up getting raped under the false pretense that they are getting healed”, he said.
