While Zimbabwe and pretty much the entire world is in church, or throwing parties and clinking glasses of champagne at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, some parents-to-be are having their own sort of celebrations in the maternity ward.
Welcoming a new addition to the family is exciting, more so as a way to start off the new year.
While holidays are a popular time for baby making, babies are less likely to be born on popular holidays which makes them special. Christmas, New Years, Christmas Eve and Boxing Day all make the top 10 least common birthdays worldwide.
December 25 (Christmas Day) is the least common birthday, while January 1 (New Year’s Day) is the second least common. December 24 (Christmas Eve) also makes the list as the 3rd least common birthday.
13 babies in total were born at Belvedere Maternity Hospital, Melbourne Hospital and CBD Clinic on the 1st of January 2022. Of the 13 babies 6 were boys while 7 were girls .
Yesterday, hospital authorities were still tallying the number of babies delivered at provincial hospitals countrywide.
Speaking to Identities Media, Matron Agnes Matigere of Melbourne Maternity Hospital stressed that Covid-19 still existed and advised all pregnant and breastfeeding women to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their families from severe illness.
“I want to take this opportunity to wish a happy and prosperous new year to all parents who welcomed their babies,” said Matigere.
There are old wives’ tales and myths for just about everything, especially when it comes to babies. It’s not hard to find stories on figuring out your baby’s gender with a ring on a string, making yourself go into labor by driving down a bumpy road, or knowing if your baby will have hair based on your heartburn symptoms during pregnancy. They’re all in good fun, but rarely are they ever accurate (or scientifically backed, for that matter).
All over the world babies born on New Year’s Day are said to be lucky fellows.
According to old wives’ tales, from the day they’re born throughout the rest of their lives, New Year’s babies will find luck in love, finances, home, and every other aspect of life. Also, the closer they’re born to the stroke of midnight, the luckier they are.
New Year’s babies are also said to have a green thumb which is great gardening skills. This falls in line with fertility which they are said to also have because it is technically bringing new life into the world.
So, even though we do not know if the tales are myths or facts, one thing is certain. New years babies are truly a rare gem and will always be celebrated in an extra special way.
The Mbuya Nehanda Maternity department said they would be releasing an official statement to reveal the number of babies born on New Year’s Day.
