Zimbabwean MP Barbara Rwodzi has been hailed not only in Zimbabwe but across Africa for standing her ground at the Pan-African Parliament elections held in Midrand, South Africa.
Africans from all walks of the Motherland were tuned into the events that unfolded in Johannesburg where dramatic scenes were seen. From what viewers observed, much of the commotion was caused by accusations of voter tampering at ballot boxes.
In one video clip, an unidentified member was seen flinging a kick towards ANC Chief Whip Pemmy Majodina who, before the video feed cut off, was seen launching forward to attempt a rebuttal.
In an in depth conversation with Identities Media, Barbara said,
“I don’t feel any different after this experience because I just had to do what I did”. Certain Francophone countries in the Pan-African institution introduced corruption where USD 2000 was given to more than 200 MPs in the institution as a form of bribe to stay in power”.
“About 240 MPs have gone home with more than USD 5000 in their pockets from the 2 candidates who were competing for the post”, she said.
Going with the mantra “No Rotation no vote”, Honorable Rwodzi and other leaders from Southern African countries like MP Pupurai Togarepi and EFF president, Julius Malema made their position clear that they want a united Africa and a rotating leadership which is being resisted mainly by Francophone countries.
Asked about the way forward to make sure we achieve a united Africa where positions are rotated, Honorable Rwodzi said African leaders have a duty to lead families, churches, institutions etc, hence they should respect others and observe that everyone has a purpose.
“Let’s honour our promises to the people because when leadership changes, diversity and wisdom is created to take the continent to another level”.
“As Africans we are diverse and there is so much we can teach each other when positions are passed down. You can’t lead an institution for more than 15 years”, she said.
Proceedings of the election were later suspended for the third time amid the chaos. South African publication, eNCA reported that the Pan-African Parliament will now elect new leadership in October.
The Zimbabwean MP who is known as the Lioness of Churumanzi firmly asserted herself as a fierce voice to be reckoned with in a room full of impolite men,leaving the watching audience clearly impressed.
Honorable Rwodzi is expected back in Zimbabwe on Friday.
