In a welcome development, the Zimbabwe Musicians Union president, Edith Katiji, has been appointed as Vice President of the International Federation of Musicians (FIM), becoming the first African woman to be appointed this position in history.
Edith Katiji who is known professionally as Edith WeUtonga is a multi-talented Afro-jazz and traditional musician who is a leading vocalist, songwriter, actor, music teacher and a profound bass guitar player. Katiji also plays acoustic guitar, mbira and drums.
Being of Malawi origin whilst also having grown up in Matebeleland, it is no surprise the songbird sings in 4 different languages which are mainly Shona, Chichewa, Ndebele and English. Her band is called Utonga which means dawn.
The Zimbabwe Musicians Union (ZIMU is an organization aimed at addressing a number of music industry professionals including vocalists, instrumentalists, and promoters.
The union invites musicians and music industry professionals to be part of it with the thrust of increasing numbers and thus leverage to meet the needs of artists in communities and in Zimbabwe as a country.
