You Must Know Them: Dr Hellen Venganai

You Must Know Them

Nyari Mashayamombe – Editor in Chief

In this interview Identities Media (IM) caught up with Dr Hellen Venganai (HV) to catch up and learn about her life and career. We are excited to bring this story to you. Enjoy!

IM: Tell us about yourself.

HV: My name is Dr Hellen Venganai and I’m lecturing at the Women’s University in Africa. I am also a child rights and gender equality activist. I will be turning 42 by the end of this month.

My career path started in broadcast journalism where I worked for Radio Zimbabwe for several years. I found myself presenting and producing programmes that focused on health (which earned me the name The Matron), women and children’s issues.

Working in the media indirectly nurtured me to be a voice for those who may not be accorded space to speak for themselves.

When I moved to another company as a Corporate Communications Manager, I was the first woman to sit in management meetings. I used this position to get the management to secure sanitary bins for female workers who used to struggle to find somewhere to dispose of their soiled sanitary pads.

This passion to make meaningful impact in society was the reason I co-founded a non-profit organisation, Mambure Trust in 2016 which has conducted basic computer literacy training for teachers and learners in several rural primary schools. Mambure Trust is also encouraging girls to venture into male dominated fields.

I want to be remembered as one of the people who have contributed to improving the lives of the less privileged in society.

IM: What drives the work that you do?

HV: I am passionate about inspiring others to realise their potential, especially girls and women. I know there are many out there who look up to me. This alone drives me to work very hard to push some boundaries.

I believe my work should motivate others to champion worthy causes and be better versions of themselves.

I must also admit that I have been inspired by a lot of other women within and beyond our country who are successful in various fields. Such kind of women push me to wake up in the morning and go an extra mile in everything I do.

IM: What do you see in the near future?

HV: Well, I have big dreams and I just need serious action and focus to achieve them. In the near future I see Mambure Trust expanding its work to various communities.

At a more personal level, I foresee myself starting a business to compliment what I am already doing.

IM: What are your parting words or advice?

HV: My parting advice is that one should never tire from desiring to learn new skills. In Shona we say, kudzidza hakuperi, which means learning does not end.

We should never allow ourselves to be full vessels which cannot accommodate additional drops of knowledge. It is therefore important to surround ourselves with people that constantly challenge us to set higher goals.
