The body of former President Robert Mugabe was out of singapore this morning and arrived this afternoon heading home for burial in a country bitterly divided by the hero turned despot’s legacy.
Mugabe died after receiving treatment at a Singapore hospital for several months.
Mugabe, a guerrilla leader who swept to power after Zimbabwe’s independence from Britain and went on to rule for 37 years until he was ousted in November 2017, died on Friday, aged 95.
Former president’s health deteriorated after he was toppled by military and former loyalists in November 2017, ending an increasingly iron- fisted rule that sent economy into ruin.
On Monday, a delegation led by vice President Kembo Mohadi travelled to the affluent city- state on a chartered flight to bring him home today.
Early Wednesday morning a hearse transporting Mugabe’s body left Singapore funeral parlour bound for an airport and accompanied by police escort, driving past a group of waiting journalist.
Meanwhile, the body of the veteran politician Robert Mugabe is now at Borrowdale Brook known as Blue roof before heading to Rufaro Stadium where the public will get a chance to view it.
Thousands gathered at the airpot to remove the body and thronged the Blue Roof, his million dollar mansion where he lies in state tonight.
The body is expected to go to Zvimba, Mugabe’s rural home where it is expected to also lie in state before coming back to Harare for public proceedings of the funeral on Saturday. He is expected to be buried at a place to be announced on Sunday.
