In a bold and unconventional move, former Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) pastor and philosopher Joshua Maponga has abandoned his Christian faith to pursue a profound spiritual journey rooted in his ancestral heritage.
Maponga, who left Christianity several years ago, has now taken up residence in the caves and mountains, seeking to rediscover the core of his cultural roots and find healing.
“It’s a healing process to find the roots of our ancestors and reconnect with our culture,” Maponga explained. “I’m taking the time to reconnect with mother earth and the natural world around me.”
The former pastor’s decision to retreat from organized religion stems from his growing disillusionment with the state of many modern churches, which he believes have become “money-making schemes” more focused on wealth than spiritual growth.
“Most churches should be closed down and converted into factories,” Maponga declared. “Pastors are forming churches solely to enrich themselves, not to spread the word of God.”
By embracing his ancestral traditions, Maponga hopes to find a more authentic form of spirituality, one that is deeply connected to the land and his cultural heritage.
Maponga’s unconventional journey has sparked debate, with some viewing it as a rejection of Christianity and others seeing it as a courageous quest for personal and spiritual fulfillment.
Regardless of the perspectives, Maponga’s decision to leave behind his Christian past and take up residence in the caves and mountains represents a bold and thought-provoking step on his spiritual path.
