IM: Tell us about yourself.
GK: My name is Godwin Kalu, and I am the founder of LeadWorld Leadership initiative. I have an educational background in Chemical Engineering but I have spent the last 7 years of my life engineering human beings and solving problems around leadership, education and economic development. LeadWorld is a social sector leadership development initiative committed to helping emerging leaders discover and develop competencies for effective leadership and productivity.
This we do through the pillars of Leadership Development Programs, SDGs and Partnerships. Together with a team of young leaders and mentors, LeadWorld has influenced more than 3000 young persons in the last 7 years through its intervention programs (including the Lead Young Project, Leadworld Exclusive Sessions, Youth Skill-up initiative, and Leadership, Purpose and Career Conference); and has made a positive impact on students across select public schools, out-of-school youths, emerging leaders, and startups. I would like to be remembered for my selfless positive contributions towards supporting young people to live their best lives without feeling inadequate, disadvantaged or deprived
IM: What makes you wake up in the morning?
GK: I am highly passionate about helping young people live value-driven lives. I’m motivated largely by the huge leadership gap visible in Nigeria with special attention on young people who are affected by wrong leadership examples, and who have become victims of leadership failure, having to suffer the consequences of high rate of unemployment, criminal activities and cultism.
I believe that young people should be taught leadership and supported to grow leadership values, life skills and develop competencies that will enable them gain meaningful jobs, disassociate from crime, grow their voices of impact and contribute meaningfully to solving societal problems.
IM: What does being part of the ‘Top 10 Finalists in the Donors for Africa’s Social Innovators Bootcamp’ mean to you?
GK: Being a part of the “Top 10 Finalists in the Donors for Africa’s Social Innovators Bootcamp” is an inspiring feat for me. It has raised the confidence I have in myself and in my work with young people. I’m further determined to press into the big picture knowing that my work is noticeable and that the impact is visible.
IM: What do you see in the near future after this?
GK: I see myself taking over the development space intentionally with my message on leadership excellence, and putting to practice the things I have learned all through the Bootcamp. I see more young people building their future on positive foundations layered by leadership values. I see a society where crime will reduce and young people live meaningful lives.
I see LeadWorld becoming a global leadership development community of influential leaders.
IM : What are your parting words or advice for the next class and Africa at large?
GK: Many young people in Africa are doing amazing things. They need to be encouraged and supported to thrive. Above all, there’s a future for young people who will take up the call to developing their leadership competencies, living value-driven lives and looking out for opportunities to solve problems no matter how little they may appear.
We all must be intentional about this commitment and support initiatives that will rescue our morally-bankrupt society and lead towards leadership excellence. “what would you like to be remembered for”
