According to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution (ZETDC), the holding company for ZESA, The price of electricity in Zimbabwe has gone up by 30 per cent with immediate effect. The new electricity tariffs are with effect from 26 May 2021.
In a statement, ZETDC said,
“The Zimbabwe Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) would like to advise its valued customers that electricity tariffs have been adjusted upwards by 30%, effective 26th May 2021․
The increase is based on the outstanding indexation for the year 2020.”
The increase in the price of electricity does not come as a surprise, as Minister of Energy and Power Development, Zhemu Soda announced this week that the tariffs need to be reviewed. According to the minister, ZETDC was suffering a loss as it was importing electricity at higher prices and selling it for less.
In an interview with ZBC News, the Minister said,
“As you might be aware, we are importing power from outside the country especially during peak hours and more so during this time of the year in winter,” said the minister in a recent interview with ZBCtv.”
“Our power is imported at as high as US$0,24c per kilowatt hour whereas we are selling that power from ZWL$07,67c per kilowatt/hour.”
