Identities Media had the privilege of attending the European Union Day celebrations in Harare on Friday, a vibrant gathering hosted at the EU Ambassador’s residence which brought together hundreds of guests from Zimbabwe’s diplomatic, business, civic, creative, and development communities.
Over the years, the Europe Day commemorations have become one of the notable gatherings on Harare’s diplomatic calendar, creating a space where government officials, ambassadors, international organisations, entrepreneurs, civil society leaders, and young people come together in celebration of partnership, cooperation, and dialogue.
Speaking during the event, EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Katrin Hagemann reflected on the growing relationship between Zimbabwe and the European Union, while highlighting initiatives supporting youth empowerment, women’s empowerment, innovation, sustainable development, and economic cooperation across the country.
The celebrations carried a strong message around collaboration and people-to-people engagement, with emphasis placed on building partnerships that create opportunities and strengthen communities.
Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Frederick Shava also acknowledged the strengthening engagement between Zimbabwe and the European Union, while reiterating Zimbabwe’s call for the removal of the remaining restrictive measures affecting the country and encouraging deeper economic cooperation moving forward.
In a symbolic close to the evening, both leaders raised a toast to continued friendship, partnership, and stronger relations between Zimbabwe and the European Union, reflecting the spirit of diplomacy and shared aspirations that defined the celebrations.
