A 55-year-old self-proclaimed prophet, known as Madzibaba, has been brought before the Murewa Magistrate’s Court on serious charges of rape. The accused, who served as a spiritual leader in the Nyajina area, is alleged to have exploited his position of power to manipulate a vulnerable congregant.
According to court documents, the complaint was filed after the victim, a member of Madzibaba’s congregation, claimed he coerced her into sexual relations under the pretense of delivering a prophecy. The victim reported that the prophet threatened her with dire consequences should she refuse his advances, asserting that her obedience was necessary for her spiritual wellbeing.
The incident reportedly occurred in February 2023, with the victim stating she felt compelled to comply out of fear for her safety and spiritual standing. She described feeling trapped and helpless, a sentiment that resonates with many women who face similar abuses of power within religious institutions.
The case has sparked outrage in the community, prompting discussions about the need for greater accountability among church leaders. Many are calling for more robust measures to protect vulnerable individuals from manipulation and abuse.
Madzibaba has been remanded in custody and is set to appear in court again on February 17, 2025. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for both the community and religious institutions across Zimbabwe, highlighting the urgent need for reforms to safeguard against such abuses.
As the story unfolds, advocates urge for justice and a re-examination of the power dynamics that can lead to such exploitation within sacred spaces.
