President Emmerson Mnangagwa has hailed 2024 as a year of remarkable progress for Zimbabwe, despite facing natural disasters like El Niño and challenges within his administration. In a recent address, he expressed optimism about the resilience and determination demonstrated by his government.
In the energy sector, Zimbabwe successfully tackled the consequences of low water levels at Kariba Dam by prioritizing green energy solutions. The introduction of duty-free imports for renewable energy equipment and initiatives from Independent Power Producers were pivotal in maintaining a steady power supply across the country.
Despite the drought conditions induced by El Niño, the agriculture sector showcased the government’s preparedness, as no citizens faced hunger. This achievement underscores a strong commitment to food security, even in tough times.
The economy displayed signs of stability, bolstered by prudent fiscal and monetary policies that provided a solid foundation for ongoing growth. In health, the government effectively contained a cholera outbreak that threatened vulnerable communities, demonstrating a swift and decisive response.
Efforts in devolution and decentralization also gained momentum in 2024, focusing on inclusive development. Local authorities have been proactive in implementing master plans and enhancing service delivery. Notably, 367 priority projects were executed across the nation, resulting in significant advancements in manufacturing, social protection, and infrastructure.
However, President Mnangagwa acknowledged areas needing improvement, including the slow adoption of information communication technologies (ICTs) and outdated government communication strategies. He urged officials to re-evaluate their approaches during the Cabinet break, emphasizing the importance of aligning with national goals.
Specifically calling out Minister Tatenda Mavetera of ICTs and Minister Jenfan Muswere of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, he highlighted their crucial roles in modernizing ministry websites and adopting efficient communication strategies to meet the expectations of the youth and the broader population.
Looking ahead to 2025, President Mnangagwa reiterated his commitment to advancing Zimbabwe towards Vision 2030. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate, asserting, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo!” (A nation is built by its citizens). With steadfast leadership and collective effort, Zimbabwe is poised for accelerated development and prosperity.
