A midwife employed at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital has appeared in the Harare Magistrates Court, facing grave charges related to human trafficking involving an infant.
Betty Sena is accused of illegally fabricating the death of a newborn and subsequently transferring the baby to another woman. She has been remanded in custody, with a bail decision expected on December 3.
The prosecution alleges that between February and March 2024, Sena collaborated with Evelyn Zisengwe, Dion Tore, and Ayanda Zisengwe in a scheme to traffic a female infant, now nine months old, for unlawful adoption. It is claimed that Sena encouraged Zisengwe to deliver her baby prematurely, resulting in the birth of a girl on February 25 at just 28 weeks gestation.
On March 5, Sena is said to have handed over the newborn to Tore at the hospital, falsifying documents to make it appear as though Tore was the biological mother. Authorities allege that Sena misused her medical position to discharge the premature infant before it was medically advisable.
Investigators report that Sena received $20 for her involvement and created a false death certificate indicating that Zisengwe’s child had died shortly after birth.
Sena’s arrest came after she was implicated by both Tore and Zisengwe, leading detectives from the CID Counter Terrorism Unit to take action.
Ms. Mercy Masamvi represented the State during the court proceedings as this disturbing case continues to develop.
