A vendor, Farai Yobe, made an appearance in court this week following an incident involving a municipal policeman. On Monday, Yobe was brought before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, facing charges related to attempted murder.
Magistrate Gofa granted Yobe bail set at US$200, with the condition that he reports to the ZRP Mbare Police Station twice a week.
The incident occurred on November 7, when Themba Maudzo, a municipal policeman, was on patrol with other officers. They encountered Yobe, who was selling mazhanje from an open truck alongside his accomplice, Raymond Katyaurere. Upon being informed of his arrest, Yobe was to be escorted to the City of Harare headquarters.
In a turn of events, Yobe’s accomplice, already in custody, allegedly pushed Maudzo from the moving vehicle as they attempted to flee. Other municipal police officers pursued them but were unable to catch up.
Maudzo sustained minor injuries, including bruises on his hip, hand, and shoulder, but received medical attention at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The case highlights the challenges faced by municipal police officers while ensuring public safety. As the legal process unfolds, Yobe is expected to comply with court orders while his case progresses.
