In a recent court appearance, Action Chakauya, a 35-year-old security guard, is facing charges related to a fire that impacted the Mbare Musika Retail Market. The incident occurred when Chakauya attempted to keep warm by starting a fire near one of the market’s entrances. Unfortunately, the fire spread beyond his control, leading to significant damage.
The blaze, which ignited on the night of October 8, 2024, resulted in the destruction of market stalls and the loss of goods for many vendors, totaling an estimated USD 5,000,000. The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe stated that Chakauya has been charged with negligently causing serious damage to property, as outlined in section 141 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
Chakauya, who was on duty at the time, will return to court on October 21 for a bail ruling. The Mbare Musika Retailers have been identified as the complainant in this case.
In the aftermath of the fire, discussions on social media have raised concerns about the possibility of the fire being set intentionally to remove vendors from the market. However, no evidence has substantiated these claims.
As the community processes this unfortunate event, support for the affected vendors has been encouraged.
