In a dramatic turn of events, thirty learners from Findale School in Eastview, Harare, faced the prospect of missing their Ordinary Level Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) exams due to alleged misappropriation of their exam fees by the school owner.
However, hope was restored when President Emmerson Mnangagwa intervened, ensuring that the affected students would have their fees covered, allowing them to proceed with their remaining subjects.
During a visit to the school on Wednesday, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerai Moyo, expressed gratitude for the President’s timely intervention. “I want to thank His Excellency the President for coming to the rescue of all these learners, as their fundamental right to education had been compromised by the theft committed by the school owner,” Moyo stated.
The Minister further emphasized the ongoing challenge posed by the proliferation of unregulated schools, promising that the Ministry would take stringent actions against institutions operating illegally.
ZIMSEC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Lazarus Nembaware, confirmed that arrangements were in place for the affected students to sit for their exams. “We are now finalizing all necessary preparations, and starting tomorrow, these learners will report to designated centers to write their exams as Pirate candidates, with their results to be made public,” Nembaware announced.
In a bid to prevent similar incidents in the future, the government has pledged to implement decisive measures against any schools found to be operating outside legal frameworks. This commitment aims to safeguard the educational rights of learners across the nation.
