A 27-year-old man from Shurugwi, Midlands province, has received an 18-year prison sentence for murdering his 94-year-old grandmother, whom he accused of casting spells on family members.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) stated on Wednesday that Takudzwa Mugariri of Maroza village went to his grandmother’s home on February 3, alleging she was bewitching the family.
In a violent act, he burned her clothes and traditional medicines before striking her repeatedly with a wooden log, targeting her head, face, buttocks, and back, which ultimately led to her death.
After the incident, a police report was filed, resulting in Mugariri’s arrest, trial, and sentencing.
In a related case, three brothers—Zamani Ndlovu, Mehluli Ndlovu, and Mpilwenzima—were each sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of a 31-year-old man. The altercation began while they were drinking, during which the victim referred to them as his brothers-in-law because one of the brothers had a child with his sister.
This comment incited the brothers, leading to a brutal assault that involved multiple blows, being struck with a brick, and a knife wound to the thigh, ultimately causing the victim’s death, according to the NPAZ.
