Zimbabwe is set to launch its inaugural Munhumutapa Day on September 15, 2024, at the Great Zimbabwe Monument in Masvingo. The event, coinciding with President Mnangagwa’s 82nd birthday, is expected to attract over 30,000 youths from across the country.
Munhumutapa Day, to be celebrated annually, honors Zimbabwe’s journey towards becoming an upper-middle-income society by 2030. It draws inspiration from the pre-colonial Mutapa Empire ruler, Munhumutapa, credited with building the Great Zimbabwe monument.
The celebration aligns with President Mnangagwa’s vision of national development using local resources, encapsulated in the phrase “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo” (A country is built by its own people). The Zanu PF National Youth League, organizing the event, sees parallels between Munhumutapa’s legacy and Mnangagwa’s leadership in driving Zimbabwe’s progress.
The day’s activities will include the launch of the Munhumutapa Youth National Housing Project in Masvingo City, aiming to provide serviced housing stands for youth across Zimbabwe.
This new national day serves multiple purposes: celebrating Zimbabwe’s history, honoring President Mnangagwa’s leadership, and focusing on the country’s development goals. It also coincides with Mnangagwa’s recent assumption of the SADC chairmanship, adding regional significance to the occasion.
