In a vibrant display of community spirit and youth engagement, the 11th Chikonamombe Bhora Youth Tournament and music extravaganza has emerged as a powerful ally in the government’s efforts to combat drug and substance abuse among young people.
The event, held at Mhangura Stadium on Saturday, drew an impressive crowd of over 5,000 attendees. Under the theme “Youths against Drugs and Substance Abuse,” the tournament brought together young athletes from all wards in Mhangura constituency, competing in volleyball, netball, and football.
Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, the Mhangura Constituency legislator and organizer of the event, emphasized that the tournament’s primary goal was to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. “This event is about more than just sports and music,” Dr. Mombeshora explained. “It’s an opportunity to spread a crucial message throughout our community about the health and social challenges associated with drug use.”
The guest of honor, Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire, praised the initiative and highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to address the issue. Minister Machakaire revealed that his ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and Child Care to combat substance abuse through various programs, including awareness campaigns, empowerment initiatives, and skills development for youth.
In a move to encourage active participation in the fight against drugs, Minister Machakaire urged young people to become whistleblowers, reporting those who sell illegal substances in their communities. This approach aims to create a grassroots movement against drug abuse, empowering youth to take charge of their future.
The tournament not only provided a platform for spreading this important message but also celebrated the talents of local youth. Winning teams and individuals were rewarded with monetary prizes and trophies, recognizing their athletic achievements and commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.
In a gesture of support for local sports development, Minister Machakaire presented Tinmac branded jerseys to the victorious teams. The presence of scouts from Simba Bhora at the event added an extra layer of excitement, potentially opening doors for talented young athletes to pursue their sporting dreams.
This successful event demonstrates how community-driven initiatives can effectively complement government efforts in addressing social issues. By combining sports, music, and education, the Chikonamombe Bhora Youth Tournament has created a winning formula for engaging youth and promoting a healthier, drug-free future for the community.
As the cheers from the Mhangura Stadium fade, the impact of this event is sure to resonate far beyond the playing field, inspiring young people to make positive choices and stand united against substance abuse.
