In a shocking turn of events, two officials from the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare in Guruve, Mashonaland Central Province, have been arrested for allegedly stealing food aid meant for vulnerable villagers. Mutsa Sibanda (36) and Mazvitaishe Maisiri (26) are accused of pilfering 31 bags of wheat intended for distribution in Guruve, Ward 19, as part of the government’s Rural Food Aid and Urban Cash Transfer programs.
The theft was exposed by Headman Chairperson Kazunga of Ward 19, who reported that the incident occurred on August 12 at Negomo Primary School in Guruve. According to Kazunga, the social welfare officers had compiled a list of beneficiaries, but mysteriously left out most people over 60 years old. When Kazunga and the local Ward 19 Councilor presented a list of complaining vulnerable elderly to the social welfare officer, they were told not to interfere.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Mashonaland Central Province, Inspector Milton Mundembe, confirmed the case, saying, “We appreciate the cooperation from local leadership and encourage the public to provide tips to enhance transparency.”
The arrested officials are currently in custody, facing charges under case number CR 76/07/24. This incident highlights the need for accountability and transparency in food aid distribution, ensuring that vulnerable communities receive the support they desperately need.
