The ZANU PF Bulawayo Province has endorsed President Emmerson Mnangagwa as its preferred candidate for the 2028 presidential election. This comes despite President Mnangagwa’s recent statement that he would not continue in office when his current term ends in 2028, as he wants to retire.
However, ZANU PF provinces have been increasing calls for President Mnangagwa to stay in power beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms to see through the country’s Vision 2030 plan.
Archibald Chiponda, the ZANU PF Bulawayo Province spokesperson, said that at a recent provincial meeting, the party structures “resoundingly and thunderously called for his Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office beyond 2030 to give him ample time to complete Vision 2030 of transforming Zimbabwe to an upper-middle-income society.”
The meeting was attended by senior ZANU PF officials, including the party’s national political commissar and politburo members from the province.
Other provinces, such as Masvingo, have already endorsed President Emmerson Mnangagwa for the 2028 election. However, Mnangagwa has not moved to rein in the provinces for going against his stated wishes.
Separately, ZANU PF youths in Mashonaland East province also resolved that President Emmerson Mnangagwa should extend his tenure beyond 2028 to personally see the fruition of Vision 2030 and deliver Zimbabwe to the “promised land.”
