Thokozani Khupe, a legislator from Bulawayo, has called on the Zimbabwean government to increase funding for universities and promote research on cancer medications throughout the country.
Thokozani Khupe made these remarks in a recent parliamentary debate on cancer research. She emphasized the importance of the government fully funding universities to undertake research on new cancer treatments. Khupe stated that the high cost of cancer treatment in the country has led to the loss of many lives, as only a few can afford the expenses.
She highlighted the critical role of research and development in finding new and improved ways to enhance public health and stay ahead of the disease. She argued that the government should prioritize and invest aggressively in research and development, as it can lead to breakthroughs in new cancer treatments. Khupe believes that Zimbabwe has talented professors, doctors, and scientists who can creatively and innovatively conduct research on new, modern cancer medications.
Additionally, Khupe called on the government to engage with other organizations in holding cancer awareness programs to educate the majority of the population about the disease. She emphasized that early detection of cancer is crucial, as it is cheaper and easier to treat the disease at an early stage. Khupe stated that the government should intensify awareness programs to make people aware that cancer is a deadly disease that requires early treatment.
Furthermore, Khupe urged the government to ensure that cancer treatment is available, accessible, and affordable in Zimbabwe. She argued that it is better for patients to travel from remote areas like Binga to Mpilo for cancer treatment than to travel to India for treatment. Khupe also highlighted that the government must prioritize healthcare for all, as a healthy population is essential for attracting investors to the country.
