Afrotraditional folk artist Tendex and Afro RnB, gospel artist Bryan K were the latest additions to the Sofar Songs From A Room (Sofar) platform, as they shared the stage with the acclaimed Prince Edward High School marimba and jazz ensembles.
The talented artists performed at the 13th edition of Sofar Harare, held in the school’s auditorium on June 29. The event began with the PE jazz band’s captivating cover versions, including ‘Seven Summers’ by Shaun Martin and classics by Jimmy Dludlu.
Next, the school’s renowned marimba band, consisting of Kudakwashe Mudehwe, Tsakani Nanjeese, Takunda Zishiri, Joel Magade and Donnell Chigonde, took the stage. With fluid movements and a gentle, yet firm touch, the group mesmerized the audience by remixing traditional Shona folk songs and urban pop hits like Case’s ‘I’m Missing You’ (2001).
The marimba ensemble is a prestigious musical group, comprising both a junior band of students in the early stages of their development and a senior band of advanced musicians who showcase exceptional artistry and a deep understanding of complex arrangements.
Tatenda Nyatsunga, a school music teacher, praised the event, calling it “one of the best concerts” he had attended that year, and expressed gratitude for the school’s inclusion in the Sofar platform.
Tendex’s performance was a highlight, as the artist showcased his amazing vocal range, accompanied by a mbira, shakers, and a loop station. The layers of sound he created merged in perfect harmony, delivering a mesmerizing and uplifting experience that left the audience in awe of his artistry.
