On July 19, at the Harare City Council’s Health Wellness Funfair, Health Ambassador, First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa emphasized the importance of Zimbabweans utilizing available screening services for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cancer, to reduce mortality rates. Dr Mnangagwa, who was the guest of honor at the event, made these remarks in recognition of her role in fighting NCDs and advocating wellness in communities across the country.
Dr Mnangagwa brought her Angel of Hope Foundation’s mobile hospital and clinic to offer free cancer screening services. The event primarily benefited council workers and their families but also included participants from various organizations.
The First Lady conducted an interactive session promoting traditional dishes known for their health benefits. She pledged to continue her campaign for early and free cancer screening across Zimbabwe through wellness programs.
Dr Mnangagwa highlighted the critical role of wellness programs in preventing and addressing NCDs in the workplace. She praised the City of Harare for aligning their program with national priorities and Sustainable Development Goal 3 on Health and Well-being.
She stressed that wellness programs create a supportive work environment, empower employees to make healthier choices, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Dr Mnangagwa emphasized the importance of implementing effective workplace wellness programs in Zimbabwe, where the burden of NCDs is high.
The First Lady expressed particular concern about cervical and breast cancer affecting Zimbabwean women. She noted that breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Zimbabwe, after cervical cancer. Dr Mnangagwa urged early diagnosis and treatment, highlighting that over 80% of breast cancer cases in Zimbabwe are detected at advanced stages.
Dr. Mai Mnangagwa reiterated her commitment to campaigning for early and free cancer screening across Zimbabwe. She called for collaborative efforts in addressing NCDs and implementing key interventions for cancer control programming.
