A private medical facility in Mabvuku, Pacific 24hr Hospital, has pledged to empower Mavis Mada, a young girl from Hwedza who was brutally assaulted by her fellow villagers. Mavis Mada made headlines on social media after a video showing her being severely assaulted by five girls went viral. The hospital has now offered Mavis an all-expenses-paid, three-month nursing assistant training course to help her become self-sufficient.
The motive behind the attack on Mavis remains unclear, but six of her assailants, including five girls and a man, are now facing charges of aggravated indecent assault, cyberbullying, and assault.
According to the hospital’s statement, the training course will provide Mavis with both theoretical and practical instruction, with the full bill covered by the hospital. This includes the tuition fees, uniform sets, food, and accommodation for the duration of the 90-day program.
“Pacific 24hr Hospital is extending our gesture to offer her a full training on nurse aid course,” the statement read. “This training gesture is to empower the girl child, Mavis, so that she becomes self-sufficient.”
A medical examination conducted by the hospital revealed that Mavis sustained severe bruises and scars on her body, but no fractures were found in her chest, legs, or pelvis. The hospital also noted that Mavis lives with her grandmother in a rural area, as her father is deceased and her mother works as a housekeeper.
The hospital has appealed to the corporate world to support Mavis further by making donations through the Girl Child Network in Harare or directly to her.
Vimbai Mike (19) and Punish Mazhangazha (22), along with four other teenagers, have been arrested and charged with aggravated indecent assault, cyberbullying, and assault in connection with the attack on Mavis. They recently appeared before a Marondera Magistrate.
