In a move to assert control over the country’s mineral resources, the Zimbabwean Government through the Ministry of Mines And Mining Development has issued an eviction notice to all illegal occupants of the Mazowe Mine Lease 35 located near the ZRP Mazowe up to the Concession area with effect from 6th July to 13th July 2024.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, warned that anyone caught engaging in illegal mining activities will face consequences.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police therefore takes the opportunity to warn illegal occupants of mining sites and those perpetuating criminal activities to take heed of the notice and vacate or leave by the given period,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
Zimbabwe Republic Police seems committed to ensuring the law takes its course on anyone who will defy the government directive or commits criminal activity under the guise of mining syndicates or groups.
The public has been urged to cooperate with police officers as they move in to “maintain law and order” in the affected areas.
The crackdown on illegal mining activities in the Mazowe region is part of the Zimbabwean government’s broader efforts to regain control over the country’s mineral wealth, which has long been exploited by informal and criminal mining operations.
This development comes amidst ongoing concerns over environmental degradation, safety hazards, and revenue losses associated with the proliferation of illegal mining activities across Zimbabwe.
