In a historic achievement, two Zimbabwean swimmers, Denilson Cyprianos and Paige van der Westhuizen, have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking a significant milestone for the country’s swimming community.
According to the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC), Cyprianos and van der Westhuizen secured their spots through universality slots, which allow athletes from nations with fewer representatives to participate in the global sporting event.
Cyprianos, a specialist in the 200m backstroke, and van der Westhuizen, a talented freestyle swimmer, will join a contingent of Zimbabwean athletes heading to Paris in July 2024.
Their qualification Is a testament to the country’s growing swimming talent and the efforts of the Zimbabwe Aquatic Union (ZAU) to develop the sport.
“We are thrilled to see our swimmers excel on the international stage,” said ZAU President, Maryline Moyo. “This achievement is a result of hard work, dedication, and the support of our coaches, officials, and the Olympic committee.”
Cyprianos and van der Westhuizen’s Olympic debut is expected to inspire a new generation of Zimbabwean swimmers, and their participation in the Games will undoubtedly boost the profile of swimming in the country.
