President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called upon the youth of Zimbabwe to take a leading role in the fight against drug and substance abuse. Speaking at the official opening of the 32nd Junior Parliament and commemoration of the Day of the African Child, President Mnangagwa urged the young people to report drug dealers and peddlers to the authorities and to promote morally upright living among their peers.
The young people have a role to play in building the motherland, hence they are expected to bring to attention all issues affecting the children of Zimbabwe. The Government seems to be committed in developing young people into productive citizens and responsible leaders of tomorrow. “I commend the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training as well as other stakeholders for continuously enhancing this programme,” says President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
A number of young people are being negatively affected by the menace of drugs and substance abuse. The Government has set up a National Committee and a Multi-Sectorial Drug Abuse Plan to coordinate the national response against drug abuse.
The Junior Parliament is expected to be at the forefront of developing youth-friendly activities, music, and messages that help to effectively spread the call for “a drug-free Zimbabwe.” In addition, the young leaders are strongly urged to use their positions at schools, churches, universities, and communities to encourage morally upright living among their peers.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa assures that the Government is working tirelessly to implement good education policies for the benefit of learners at every level. He goes on to say, “Your access to quality, inclusive, and equitable education is important for the attainment of our national Vision 2030.”
The President also commended the Junior Parliamentarians for their fruitful deliberations and wide-ranging views, ideas, and experiences shared during the session. He encouraged them to use their positions as young leaders and influencers to promote community and national development.
This call to action by the President is a significant step in the fight against drug abuse, which has become a growing concern in Zimbabwe. The involvement of the youth in this campaign is crucial, as they are the most affected by this menace.
