The president of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa fired the now ex- cabinet minister Priscah Mupfumira and released her from all her duties with immediate effect.
The development is also confirmed in a letter signed by the Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda that Mupfumira was fired for “conduct inappropriate for a Government Minister”
“Please be advised that, His excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangangwa has in terms of Section 340, subsection (1), paragraph (f), as read with Section 104, subsection (1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe has removed you, Priscah Mupfumira from the office of Cabinet Minister and Minister of Government with immediate effect for conduct inappropriate for a Government Minister,” reads part of the letter..
Mupfumira was the Minister of Tourism during the new dispensation era. She was arrested last month on charges of corruption involving the $95 million National Social Security Authority (NSSA) funds. She is currently in custody after the Harare Magistrate denied her bail.
She denied the charges and she is due to appear in court tomorrow the 9th of August for routine remand.
Cde Mnangagwa seems now to agree with the rest of the civil society, international players in identifying rampant corruption by some senior government officials as a major setback to the country’s economic crisis and sees to have vowed to uproot it out. Prisca Mupfumira becomes the first cabinet minister to be charged by the newly formed anti-corruption agency which is on a mission to bring to book senior government officials suspected of corruption.
However, Mupfumira was once dismissed as the social welfare minister by ex-president Robert Mugabe just a few weeks before a military-led coup that knocked down the long-time ruler in November 2017. After the coup she was re-appointed with a new dispensation portfolio.
What remains of these actions of firing her is how genuine these actions by the President are, or they are another witch hunting in a continued factionalism that seem to continue in the ZANUPF. There are decade long claims for many high profiled current ministers, past and others that are serving in the ZANUPF senior positions that have been pointed as heavily corrupt and should be locked away as they have done Mupfumira.
The question that remains is to see the motives behind this particular arrest as whether genuinely for the people, in that case courts should make it possible to see the loot brought back into the state coffers, and that many of the men and women who have been looting this country to all fill up prisons. Zimbabwe maybe great again.
