Go Thee Well Mighty Play Writer: Stephen Chifunyise

Arts industry will never be the same again, it has been robbed of its gallant and veteran guru Mr Stephen Chifunyise.  Chifunyise was a playwright as well as an educationist and is also the co-founder of ‘Chipawo’ which was founded to identifying and nurturing young talent in the arts industry.

Chipawo is an arts education for development and employment trust, which works with children and young people in child development and was established in 1981. It has produced a number of famous people in the arts industry which includes the famous Blank Panther actress Danai Gurira, the late Mbira princess, Chiwoniso Maraire, the successful Hope Masike, among others.

In her dedication, Hope Masike wrote on her Facebook page: ‘Tinotenda nemakore akawanda avakapihwa, nechipo chavo chavakakwanisa kutigoverawo’. Chirarai henyu murugare. (We are grateful for the many years he was given on this earth, and his gifts that he shared with us. Rest in peace). Another traditionalist and artists.

Vachinjanja(her facebook name) who is passionate about Zimbabwe Culture and Traditional Religion simply said; ‘Fambai zvakanaka Uncle Steve (go well). Nice to have known and worked with you.

Clifford Mufiri, a veteran broadcaster said; ‘Extremely saddened. Shocked. The Stephen Chifunyise that we are mourning was a forthright man, an oasis of ideas… Well go Well muzukuru wavaMhari. A Foundation of knowledge’ .

His fellow development and educationist Dr Charlton Tsodzo expressed his shock at his passing through a Facebook message which he used a few words to express his loss: ‘Hai hai Sipambi hanzi zvadiniko… aah vakomana what sort of loss is this.. someone tell me its not true nhandi..’.

Stephen Chifunyise who died on Friday at the age of 70 is being mounted across the Zimbabwe society, the arts, education and the whole society.

Born in Nhema, Shurugwi in 1948, Chifunyise attended St Linus Matoranjera School in Chitomborwizi, Chinhoyi, for his Sub A up to Standard I. He later attended university in Zambia and the United States where he graduated with a Masters Degree in Theatre Arts in 1977.

He held several positions in the Arts industry and among them he became the Director of Chikwakwa Theatre of UNZA in 1977-1979 and later became the Secretary-General of International Theatre Institute, Zambia Centre in1977-1982.  From that he was later appointed the Secretary of National Music Industry Advisory Committee to the government of Zambia in 1980-1982 and in 1983 he became the vice-President of the Union of African Performing Artists.

He also worked for the government of Zimbabwe till the 2000s. He chaired the Southern Africa films Festivals in 1990-1996 and facilitated the review as well as the classifications of the culture sector and the formulation of the National Action Plan for the Culture Sector in Botswana in 2004-2008 Chifunyise is survived by a wife, Phillipa Chidzurira whom he married in 2016 in Jerera.
