President Emmerson Mnangagwa has challenged Zimbabweans, particularly the youth, to defend the country’s liberation legacy and reject attempts by external forces to use them to denigrate the nation.
Speaking during the burial ceremony of late National Hero, Brigadier General (Rtd) Donald Silundi Tshuma, in Harare on Wednesday, President Mnangagwa said citizens must remain patriotic and safeguard the values of the liberation struggle, adding that Zimbabwe’s future depends on unity, sovereignty and national pride.
“To the youth, I want to highlight that the late National Hero, Cde Tshuma, was your age when he crossed into Zambia to liberate our country. We are now enjoying peace, independence and freedom as a result of the sacrifices made by our forebears. I therefore challenge you to defend our revolution and reject those who want to use you as tools to denigrate your country,” he said.
President Mnangagwa also urged young people to actively contribute towards the country’s development across various sectors.
He reiterated that Zimbabwe continues to register economic growth, particularly in the mining sector.
“Mining is the backbone of our economy, with earnings reaching US$7 billion in 2025, while focus has now shifted towards local beneficiation and value addition,” he said.
“Our economy remains on an irreversible growth trajectory and is projected to grow by 5% in 2026, following a 6.6% rebound in 2025. The IMF, World Bank and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa have all confirmed this trend,” added President Mnangagwa.
The President also reaffirmed Government’s commitment to implementing programmes aimed at empowering citizens and improving livelihoods.
The late National Hero, Brigadier General (Rtd) Donald Silundi Tshuma, served the country in the Defence Forces until his retirement.
President Mnangagwa expressed sorrow over the loss of the decorated liberation war veteran.
“On behalf of our revolutionary mass Party, ZANU PF, the nation, Government and on my own behalf, I once again express my deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Tshuma family,” he said.
Brigadier General (Rtd) Donald Silundi Tshuma, popularly known as “Cde Henry Silundi” during the liberation struggle, died on 15 May 2026 at the age of 71.
