On July 25, 2025, Chiredzi South came alive with energy and excitement as the Community Paralympics took place at Boli. This heartwarming event brought together over 200 attendees, including parents, local leaders, and participants from six centers: Boli, Tichadya, Makambe, Chilonga, Majijimba, and Mhlanguleni. The day was filled with fun activities like Pada, Nhodo, dancing, singing, and sports, showcasing the incredible talents of children with disabilities.
Dr. Olivia Gumbo, the visionary behind the Community Paralympics, was inspired by her experience hosting sports events for schools and youths. “I didn’t want children with disabilities to be left out of sports,” she explained. “They have talents that need to be recognized and celebrated.” Her commitment to fostering inclusion and confidence in these children shines through in every aspect of the event.
The primary goal of the Community Paralympics is to acknowledge the talents of children with disabilities and ensure they are recognized as valuable members of the community. “I want them to know their importance and that they can showcase their abilities,” Dr. Gumbo said. The event not only provided a platform for these children to shine but also offered prizes and participation gifts, including buckets of maize, T-shirts, and hats, ensuring that every participant left with a sense of accomplishment.
Organizing the Community Paralympics is not without its challenges. Dr. Gumbo shared that resources are often limited, and her team must work creatively within these constraints. Additionally, obtaining the necessary clearances from local leaders can be a lengthy process. “I am grateful to my friends, relatives, and partners of the OG Foundation for their generous support,” she noted. To further sustain the foundation’s initiatives, she encourages individuals to purchase her five books, which are available at local bookstores and on Amazon. The titles include:
– It’s for Lord – $10
– Parenting Children of Influence in the Digital Age- $15
– Voices of Professional Women: Perception from the Global South – $15
– The Impact of Digital Technology on Adolescent Wellbeing – $15
– The Victorious Journal – $10
Proceeds from these sales directly benefit children with disabilities.
As the community comes together to celebrate talent and inclusion, it’s clear that events like the Community Paralympics play a crucial role in transforming perceptions and building confidence among children with disabilities. With the unwavering support of individuals, local leaders, and organizations, there is hope for a more inclusive future where every child is given the opportunity to shine.
