A 53-year-old Nyanga man, Shadreck Matsiwira, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping his 13-year-old niece. Mutare regional magistrate Phathekile Msipa found him guilty despite his denial, based on compelling testimony and medical evidence.
During sentencing, Magistrate Msipa condemned Matsiwira’s actions as a betrayal of trust, emphasizing that he was meant to protect his niece. The court highlighted the severe trauma inflicted on the child and stated that child abuse will not be tolerated, imposing an effective 17-year sentence after three years were suspended for good behavior.
After the incident, the young girl initially confided in a neighbor, who refused to help due to personal issues with the child’s parents. When she later told her mother, her complaint was dismissed. Isolated and unsupported, the girl eventually sought help from the Department of Social Welfare, which assisted her in making a formal police report. Medical examinations confirmed the abuse, leading to Matsiwira’s arrest.
The case sheds light on the disturbing reality of young girls being abused by relatives in their own homes, which should be a safe space. It raises critical questions about what should happen when those who are supposed to protect children become their abusers.
