Trial Resumes for Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe.

The trial of businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, who are facing fraud charges totaling US$7.7 million linked to the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme, is set to resume tomorrow.

The prosecution is expected to begin cross-examining Mpofu, who has already completed his evidence-in-chief. During his testimony, Mpofu denied all allegations, asserting that his actions were consistent with his role as a representative of Blackdeck, the company awarded the contract to supply goats for the government initiative aimed at improving rural livelihoods.

The State accuses Mpofu and Chimombe of misappropriating funds by misrepresenting their capacity to fulfill the contract. Prosecutors allege that after receiving payment, the two failed to meet their obligations, leaving the project incomplete. Furthermore, they claim that Blackdeck’s bid documents included forged Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) tax clearance and National Social Security Authority (NSSA) compliance certificates, indicating that the tender was secured through fraudulent means.

Both accused initially sought discharge at the close of the State’s case. However, Justice Pisirayi Kwenda dismissed Mpofu’s application, ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case that warranted a full defense. Chimombe later withdrew his own application and opted to testify in his defense. His legal team contends that the allegations misrepresent the facts and maintains that their actions were above board. As the trial progresses, Mpofu has taken the witness stand to defend himself against the serious charges.
