Women are critical both in the home and at workplaces because of their innate abilities. They are naturally endowed with multi-tasking skills. During the talk show series by Umhlobo/Identities on Women in Leadership in Zimbabbwe, Real Time Media founder Tendai Madondo said that women should be proud of themselves because of their unique innate abilities.
At the workplace women are a blessing. An organization with a well-rounded workforce creates gender- balanced business perceptions for prudent decision-making. Without the input of women at the workplace, decisions made are skewed in favour of men ignoring the critical work group, women!
Madeline Albright [1990] clearly stated that the women in power can be counted on to raise issues that others overlook, support ideas that others oppose, and seek an end to abuse that others accept.
Globally women have proved more capable in roles that have been traditionally preserved for men. Zimbabwe’s defense minister for instance, Oppah Muchinguri, is a woman. Recently Zambia had a female president Joyce Banda. In business women like Chipo Mutasa have taken the lead in the telecommunication industry.
Research shows that companies with the highest representation of women on board financially outperform those with the lowest representation of women on board [Wagner and Narayanaan,2007].
Speaking at the show hosted by Nyari Mashayamombe, Wild Geese Managing Director acknowledged that women are a blessing be it at home or at work. A family without women can be equated to a bus without fuel and an institution without women can be equated to a bird without wings, a guest exclaimed.
There is the general acceptance of the present day family dynamics that have changed, where men are looking after their children without a mother in the family, and where women are raising kids single handedly. There are companies functioning with men as leaders, these are the ones being challenged to embrace employment of women in positions of leadership.
There are companies being headed by women such as Zimbabwe’s Securico Security which was founded and is being led by Divine Ndhlukula, where excellency and success is being realised. Whenever women are present there is a sense of balance, something important for development to prevail. Women are the epitome of strength, sacrifice and courage and TV shows like Identities Umhlobo should be commended for creating the platform to lead such important conversations, to question the status quo and promote women leadership.
